tune on screen and play midi version Alborada De Santa Maria Alboradas are meant to welcome the dawn.. i.e be played 1st thing in the morning - as if! This is a typical one for Gaita (Galician Bagpipes) from Galicia Agurra/Simon's Fandango. Two tunes from the Basque region of Northern Spain. The 1st is a strange balletic sort of dance that a Basque chap dances to a lady and tries to impress her, also called "Reverencia" The 2nd is a more sprightly Fandango that maybe he dances with her if he is successful! I learned it from Simon Booth. Lancaster Lasses/Stanley For Ever The first is (I think) a minuet from Jamie Knowles book "Northern Frisk" .He doesn't give its origin - I would love to know. The second is from the Winder mss and also Playford's "English Dancing Master" where it is called "Mr Lane's Maggot" The Young Andrew Set Three of my own tunes in odd time signatures. "Young Andrew's Gallop" was written for a film project based on the ballad "The Death of Young Andrew". The "Timely Consent" was in commemoration of gaining planning permission for a new shed just before New Year. and the "Herald of Bores" came about when I read that there used to be a chap employed in Grange-over-Sands (now over - Grass!) to ring a bell on the arrival of the tidal bore up the river Kent. "The Herald of Bores" was his official title! The Jocular Constable Another of mine.. just a bit of fun really Rum & Coco Two Rumbas from Guadeloupe learned from Emmanuel Parisol in France. Make me (almost) want to break out the Hawaian shirt!! Hardiman Set I'd have to have something Irish in my top 10 and I've enjoyed playing these three for many years. Hardiman is a slip jig. The others are jigs associated with the uillean pipes The Winder Jigs There is such a lot of good tunes in these manuscripts. These three jigs get played a lot for ceilidhs and flow nicely. There is a nice lift with the key change into "Mathew Briggs" more commonly known in Scotland as "Drummond Castle". 2 Winder Minuets Two lovely baroque sounding tunes fro the Winder mss. Probably French. Few of the minuets in Winder are named. The Lonsdale Hornpipe A 3/2 hornpipe with variations that Greg Stevens of the "Boat Band", an early enthusiast for Northern and "Village" music recorded on "Beggar Boy of the North" as "Crookfinger Jack". His version came from the William Irwin ms from the Lake District. This is a mixture of that and a version in the Winder mss called "Lord Stranger's Hornpipe" |
